Bob Strate -
SR-3500 in Winter !
This is my (Bob Strate
of Kamloops, B.C.)
Super Rebel
completed in
2002.
079. I mounted a set of penetrating ski's on MSR and have
been landing on
glaciers for the past 2 seasons. I remove the back seat as you need
LOTS of
room for the following gear: wing covers, engine cover, propane preheat
system, winter tent, -50 sleeping gear, skis, survival gear, sat phone,
etc
etc etc. This picture is in the great Canadian Rockies at about 6500
feet asl.
It is at the base of Mt. Clemenceau. This flight was actually my first
day of training. We completed several approach's, touch and go's and
landings. You do require excellent light, flat light is a killer on
skiis,
similar to glassy water on floats. The big difference is water is a flat
surface, glaciers are not! Only one person comes along on these
adventures.
Ps. Don't forget the firewood as wood is not found above the tree line
in
January.
152. I searched out this landing area myself, finding a
great camping spot
at 8000 feet asl in the Southern Monashees. You need to be prepared to
camp
out at -25 which it was on this night. You see MSR is put to bed for the
night and we actually went for a ski tour and returned the next day.
In the past 6 years, I have flown 550 hours. It has
allowed me to
explore
places which you would never see without this opportunity of flying
your
own airplane.
